5 Ways to Reduce Staff Sickness Days

If we’re being honest, most of us have missed on work because we were “sick” even though we had no ailment. According to the Global Absence Survey conducted by The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated, 71% workers in China, 62% in India, and 58% in Australia missed on work with their excuse being “sickness” when they weren’t actually sick.

In Hong Kong, 70 days of the year were observed to be vanished as a result of either absenteeism or presenteeism.

In Singapore alone, presenteeism has equated to a loss of $4.9 billion and 34.8 million working days, which is almost 9.7 working days per worker. What this means is that for 10 days a year, the workers, though present at the workplace, were engrossed is something other than work or were not productive at all.

Obviously, if you’re managing a company, you can’t afford this happening in your workplace. However, there are some things that you can do to reduce these “sick” absence of your workers and avoid absenteeism and presenteeism. It can save you both money and time for your company!

1. PERMIT YOUR WORKERS TO TAKE A “MENTAL HEALTH” LEAVE

Instead of your workers being downright dishonest to you or being distracted at work, permit your workers to take a “mental health” leave. It is important to regard mental health as any other ailment. You don’t want your workers being distressed, do you?

1. ESTABLISH A FLEXIBLE WORK SCHEDULE

In an era dominated by the internet, most of the work that is done at a workplace can be done at home as well. According to a survey conducted by Flexjobs on 1,200 parents, 84% of them stated that a flexible work schedule is one of the foremost aspects they consider in an occupation.

When working from home, workers save time from their routine commute, have the independence to choose their own routine, and attain more time for their families. And, this can decrease the amount of leaves that workers take for their routine chores.

3. NO E-MAILS OR CALLS REGARDING WORK AFTER HOURS

While the internet has provided many benefits, the downside is that people are connected to each other every time. Since workers may not stop working even after work-hours, the consequence can be exhaustion and fatigues.

France passed an edict in 2017 which for the workers’ “right to disconnect”. It meant that companies had to make it obvious when the workers should not send or respond to e-mails and phone calls.

1. SHIFT TO A FOUR-DAY WORKING WEEK

It is no secret that working for extended durations can result in exhaustion and anxiety for workers. As a consequence, workers will face ailments and take more sick leaves.

In the United Kingdom alone, 12.5 billion days are wasted due to anxiety, depression, and muscular ailments. By moving to a four-week work day, you can give your workers more time to become better outside of the workplace, which will increase their performance during work.

5. HOST ROUTINE MENTAL HEALTH COACHING

Providing workers with the conveniences to make themselves emotionally better can make them more productive. If the workers understand how they can cope with anxiety and tension, they can make the decisions to improve their mental health.

In an Australian research, it was observed that companies that hosted mental health coaching sessions at the workplace experienced a 10:1 profit on their investments due to the workers being present at work more.
